Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
