England and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
