Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
