Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
